Civil War Artillery Tow Hook - The tow hook was an important tool for the Civil War artilleryman. It was employed to pry open the lid of ammo crates, hammer the lid back on the crate if necessary, and to remove the tow, or cotton packing material in which the ordnance was tightly packed. Because of its practicality as a long-handled utilitarian hammer, these were not readily discarded. Tow hook measures 14 1/2" long and is marked with a patent date, "PAT. JAN 6-64"
