This Model 1855 .58 caliber cartridge box is a nice complete and authentic Civil War leather cartridge box for the .58 caliber military rifles. The front flap has two slits where the plate would have been affixed. The outer surfaces of the box exhibit wear from age and use. The outer flap has light to moderate crazing throughout. The box still has the closure tab and brass finial at the bottom. Both of the roller buckles are present on the bottom of the box. The back of the box has the belt and shoulder strap loops still intact. These were designed so the box could have been worn on the soldier’s belt or on the sling, whichever the soldier preferred. The inner flap is in nice shape and has both ears. On the innermost compartment is lacking the tins.
