  • Civil War Model 1840 Artillery Saber and Scabbard

    Civil War Model 1840 Artillery Saber and Scabbard - Manufactured by C. Roby, West Chelmsford, Mass.  Dated 1864.  The blade is marked    “C. ROBY / W. CHELMSFORD / MASS” the reverse is boldly stamped, "U.S. / 1864/ A.G.M."  Blade is in very nice condition.   Brass pommel has a domed cap.  The hilt is tight to the blade.  Original grips are strong and tight and consist of a turned wooden handle wrapped with black bridle leather and encircled seventeen times with original tight, single-twist, brass wire wrap. Black leather is very good and shows almost no wear.

    The iron scabbard exhibits a "68" on the throat.  The large iron ring bands are tight and suspension rings are present.  The scabbard appears to have a name etched into it, identification may be possible with more research.
