Commissary Department, “Report of the Number of Beef Cattle Slaughtered in the 2nd Division, 3rd Corps for the Week Ending Aug 29, 1863”
Commissary document dated August 29, 1863, a month after the Battle of Gettysburg, compiled by Assistant Commissary of Subsistence Captain James D. Earle. The document is composed on a 10” by 16” paper folded in half and breaks down the number of beef cattle slaughtered for each brigade of the division, as well as the number of hides and hoofs turned into the depot at Bealeton, Virginia. An interesting document regarding the inner workings of a Civil War army in the field. James D. Earle – Enlisted on 9/10/1862 as a Captain. On 9/10/1862 he was commissioned into US Volunteers Commissary Dept. He was Mustered Out on 1/10/1866. Promotions: Major 3/13/1865 by Brevet. Born in New York.
