Enlisted Saber Knot – Near Mint Condition Example – SOLD Inventory Number: LEA 405 Sword knots were standard issue wrist straps to the cavalry trooper to prevent loss of the saber if he had to let go of the grip for some reason in action. This is the regulation Civil War pattern made of black bridle leather and well-marked by Emerson Gaylord, one of the largest contractors of accoutrements during the war: “E.GAYLORD/ CHICOPEE/MASS.” The long strap is fixed on one end inside the turk’s head knot with narrow flat tassels. The other end is pointed, and after passing around the knucklebow of the saber hilt, slides through the turk’s head knot, where a tassel from the inner row on the is pushed through a small hole near the tip and the strap then drawn back to lock it. This is in excellent condition, with good, strong color, fine craquelure or crazing to the finish but no flaking. All the tassels are there, as are the two sliding friction loops. The strap has not been treated with any oils, preservatives, polish or dressing. The leather is flexible, but of course should not be bent at too sharp an angle.
