Description
A Manual of the Practice of Medicine
Confederate Surgeon’s Copy, 5th Missouri Cavalry by T.H. Tanner, M.D., F.L.S. Philadelphia: Lindsay and Blakiston, 1858. First American edition from the third revised and improved London edition. Identified inside to “J.B. Wood, Waverly, Lafayette Co., Mo.”, John B. Wood served as Assistant Surgeon and later Surgeon with the 5th Missouri Cavalry (CSA) under Col. Joseph Shelby. Shelby’s famed cavalry was one of the most celebrated units of the Trans-Mississippi theater. The volume also bears the ownership inscription of “E. Holderness, Selma, Ill.” (1832–1910), a physician without Civil War service. Accompanied by archival research documenting Wood’s Confederate service. An exceedingly scarce example of a period medical reference tied to a named Confederate surgeon — particularly one serving with Shelby’s command.
