Description
British Model 1796 Officer’s Gorget with Native American Trade Beads – Inventory Number: MIS 158 / SOLD An officer’s gorget was perhaps the last symbolic piece of “armor” worn by British officers to denote their authority and was hung from the neck by a silk cord at the center of the chest. The 1796 Universal Pattern officer’s gorget was the last pattern worn by officers in British army from 1796 -1831. It features a high-quality engraved Crown over “GR” for Georgius Rex flanked by olive branches. This example shows lovely wear with areas of gilt in the recesses. It was possibly presented to a British allied Native American warrior during the War of 1812 and is suspended from a string necklace made from glass and bone trade beads. The gorget measures 4 ¼” by 3 ¼.” A wonderful specimen of British and Native American history. Inventory Number: MIS 158 / SOLD
