Description

Civil War Square-Front Cap Box / SOLD

An original regulation percussion cap box with distinctive square-front flap design, widely issued during the American Civil War. Constructed of black bridle leather, the box retains its inner flap and integral implement pouch. The interior wool is no longer present, as is typical from service use. Both rear belt loops remain intact and are hand-stitched, showing wear but holding firmly. The latch tab is present, though heavily worn and partially cracked from age. The box shows surface crazing, scuffing, and areas of dry leather consistent with field use and age. The overall construction and squared front flap identify this as a wartime-produced accoutrement, most often carried by Union infantry and cavalry troops to secure percussion caps. Condition: Good for its age; leather is dry with some surface cracking. Latch tab weakened, interior wool missing. Belt loops intact and secure.
