Civil War Era Chess Set
Civil War Era Chess Set with Light Wood and Ebony Pieces in Original Box A handsome mid-19th century Civil War period chess set, featuring a complete complement of hand-turned pieces in contrasting light wood and ebony. Each chessman is lathe-turned in the classic Staunton-inspired form used during the period, with smooth wear from handling that has developed a pleasing, warm patina over time. The set remains entirely complete, an uncommon survival given the fragility of wooden playing pieces. The original wooden storage box accompanies the set, fitted with a sliding lid, and retains its untouched surface with age-appropriate wear. Chess was a favored pastime among soldiers and civilians during the Civil War, offering both diversion and intellectual challenge in camp or at home. Surviving sets with their full complement of pieces and original boxes are getting scarce.
