Confederate Cap Box

A scarce Confederate-made cartridge box of entirely hand-stitched construction, displaying the improvisational character typical of Southern accoutrement manufacture during the Civil War. The body is fitted with a crude, hand-cut secondary flap that is notably asymmetrical, reflecting non-standardized production outside of Federal regulations. Stitching throughout is coarse but intact, with no machine sewing evident. Unlike U.S. regulation pouches, this Confederate example exhibits tack marks void of the decorative embellishments found on the Union counter parts. A sand-cast brass finial remains in place at the base. Both rear belt loops are absent, though their former placement is visible. The leather shows significant age, surface crazing, and period wear consistent with hard Confederate field use.
