U.S. Model 1841 “Mississippi” Rifle by Tryon
1848 Dated with Original Tools
A fine and complete example of the classic U.S. Model 1841 percussion rifle, popularly known as the “Mississippi Rifle.” This specimen was manufactured by Tryon of Philadelphia under government contract and is lock plate dated 1848. Produced in .54 caliber, the rifle retains its distinctive brass mountings and oval patch box.
The metal surfaces display a pleasing and even silver-gray patina throughout, showing age without harsh cleaning. The walnut stock remains in very good condition, with a pair of visible inspector’s cartouches still present on the flat opposite the lock. Adding to its individuality, the left buttstock is inlaid with a large gold numeral “4,” measuring 1¼ inches high, likely denoting militia or regimental identification. Beneath the buttplate tang is the stamped number “56.”
Of special note, the rifle’s patch box still contains its original takedown tool and spare nipple—an exceedingly rare survival that underscores the rifle’s authenticity and completeness.
The Tryon firm of Philadelphia was one of the smallest contractors to deliver Model 1841 rifles, producing approximately 5,000 examples between 1844 and 1853. While overshadowed by the larger Whitney and Harpers Ferry contracts, Tryon’s production was known for its quality, and their rifles saw extensive service in both the Mexican War and the American Civil War. Surviving examples in this condition, with regimental embellishments and original accoutrements, are highly prized by collectors.
