Excavated Union Frock Coat and Personal Items
Recovered from a Confederate Camp at Penola, Caroline County, Virginia
This remarkable grouping was uncovered at the edge of a pond in a Confederate camp near Penola, Virginia, when receding water exposed portions of a Union soldier’s frock coat. The surviving wool fragments retain their deep indigo color and were found alongside eagle-button remnants, a gutta percha pipe, and an oyster shell—common refuse in winter encampments.
The presence of Union uniform material in a Confederate camp reflects the widespread wartime practice of collecting and reusing captured Federal clothing.
Water burial preserved these artifacts unusually well, offering a rare glimpse into the daily environment, scarcity, and improvisation that defined life in Confederate camps.
