Identification Badge and Discharge of Private Joseph W. Herrick, 13th New York Infantry

 

Silver shield identification badge engraved “J. W. HERRICK / Co. E / 13th Regt. N.Y.S. Vol.” Joseph W. Herrick enlisted in April 1861 in the 2-year 13th New York Infantry, which suffered significant casualties at Bull Run, Gaines’ Mill, 2nd Manassas, and Fredericksburg. The badge measures 1 1/8” by 1” and has an uncleaned silver patina and T-bar pin back. The lot includes Herrick’s original discharge document, as well as copies of muster rolls and further reading on the 13th New York Infantry. A classic Civil War identification pin in very good condition.  Joseph W. Herrick – Residence Monroe County NY; a 23 year-old Blacksmith. Enlisted on 4/25/1861 at Rochester, NY as a Private. On 5/14/1861 he mustered into “I” Co. NY 13th Infantry. He was Mustered Out on 5/13/1863 at Rochester, NY. Intra Regimental Company Transfers:  10/29/1861 from company I to company E. He was described at enlistment as: 5′ 8″, light complexion, blue eyes, dark hair. Other Information: Born in 1837 in Monroe County, NY, Died 3/29/1895 in Monroe County, NY. Buried: West Webster Cemetery, Webster, Monroe County, NY. After the War he lived in Monroe County, NY. Comes housed in a 4 x 5 inch display case with black velvet backing and descriptive card.
