Description
Massachusetts Volunteer Militia Coat Button
Massachusetts Volunteer Militia (M.V.M.) coat button, featuring the classic state motif of a raised arm wielding a sword over a colonial-style shield, framed by “MASS. VOLUNTEER MILITIA” in a ring of stars. The face retains excellent detail with bright, even gilt, making the imagery stand out sharply against the textured field.
The reverse bears the highly sought-after “ROBINSON • EXTRA • RICH” backmark—one of the premium-quality private-purchase grades offered to militia officers prior to and during the early years of the Civil War. The shank is perfectly original and stands straight.
Massachusetts militia buttons saw extensive use in the 1850s and early-war period, worn by volunteers who would go on to form the nucleus of many of the Commonwealth’s Civil War regiments. Examples with this level of relief and gilt brilliance are increasingly scarce.
A choice, collector-grade button, ideal for any display of Massachusetts material, early-war uniforms, or premium-quality militia insignia.
Comes housed in 4 x 5 riker display case with red velvet and descriptive card.
