Forty-Two Primed Metallic Cartridges for the Model 1865 Spencer Carbine
Manufactures by Sage Ammunition Works, Middletown, Connecticut – Complete Packet
A remarkably fine and complete ammunition packet containing 42 primed metallic cartridge cases for the Model 1865 Spencer Carbine, caliber .50. The pale green printed label is framed in the classic Greek-key border associated with Sage Ammunition Works and reads:
“Forty-Two, Primed, Metallic Cartridges for Spencer Carbine, Cal. 50, Model 1865. Manufactured by Sage Ammunition Works, Middletown, Conn.”
Sage was among the most important mid-war and post-war suppliers of primed cases for Spencer arms, filling significant U.S. government contracts during 1864–1865. Their packets are considerably scarcer than those of C.D. Leet, and examples in such strong condition are sought after by advanced Spencer and ammunition collectors.
The original wrapper remains fully intact, with tight folds and no evidence of rough disturbance. The label shows excellent color and clarity, with only minor age toning. The packet retains its correct rectangular blocky form, indicating that the contents remain undisturbed since manufacture.
This is a superior, display-ready example of Spencer ammunition packaging—ideal for pairing with a Model 1865 carbine, for a cavalry display, or as a standout piece in any advanced cartridge or Civil War small-arms collection. Unopened Sage packets are legitimately rare and highly desirable.
