Description
1/6 Plate Tintype of Policeman, mid–late 1860s
Scarce 1/6 plate tintype depicting a seated post–Civil War municipal policeman, wearing a double-breasted uniform coat with a shield-style police badge affixed to the chest. The officer is posed in a studio setting, moustached, with confident, relaxed bearing typical of early professional police portraiture in the Reconstruction era. Image shows light, even wear consistent with age.
Housed in an original gutta-percha case with raised classical scrollwork and figural decoration to the exterior, retaining its gilt brass mat and preserver. Early police images from this formative period of American law enforcement are scarce.
