Civil War-Era Union Smoothside Canteen with Original Cover and Strap

 

Civil War Union “smoothside” canteen features its original wool or jean cloth cover, cork stopper with iron chain, and a well-worn linen shoulder strap. The cover displays typical wear, staining, and small holes consistent with battlefield or campaign use. black stencil remnants are visible on the front, possibly a regiment, adding to its historical character. These smoothside canteens were standard issue from the mid-war period and were used by countless Union soldiers in the field.
