Description

Civil War–Period Housewife (Soldier’s Sewing Kit)

Original Civil War–era housewife, constructed of printed cotton fabric in alternating blue and reddish-brown panels with geometric striping and dot motifs. The interior unfolds to reveal multiple stitched compartments for needles, thread, and small sewing necessities, with original purple silk or cotton thread still present and a small period tassel affixed to the central section. Evidence of original needle placement remains visible in the central cloth panel.

The exterior features a black leather protective cover with a scalloped flap, secured by a small loop-and-toggle style closure. The leather is trimmed with purple-dyed edging, a striking and less commonly encountered decorative detail. Stitching throughout is hand-sewn.

Condition is consistent with wartime use: scattered fabric wear, minor losses, and surface abrasion to the leather cover, all commensurate with age and service. Overall, a well-preserved and visually appealing example.

Housewives were essential personal items carried by soldiers to mend uniforms and equipment in the field.
