Identified Civil War Soldier’s Shaving Mirror (c. 1860s)

Original Civil War–era soldier’s personal shaving mirror, dating to the 1860s, of the well-known camp and field type carried by Union soldiers. The circular glass mirror retains its original tinned backing and exhibits a pleasing, even age patina consistent with wartime use. The original thin protective zinc cover, commonly lost, is no longer present, which is typical for these utilitarian personal items.

Accompanied by an old handwritten identification note attributing the mirror to Robert Stone, a Union Army soldier from New York, along with an early collector/dealer label reading: “Identified Civil War original Soldier’s zinc Shaving Mirror 1860’s… belonging to Union Soldier Robert Stone, NY.” While the exact regimental affiliation is not stated, the identification provides an appealing personal association to a named Union soldier.

Such shaving mirrors were essential personal effects, reflecting the soldier’s effort to maintain basic hygiene and a sense of normalcy amid campaign life. Identified examples, especially with period or early provenance notes, are increasingly scarce and desirable.
