Designed for the Use of Students and Practitioners of Medicine By John C. Dalton, Jr., M.D. Philadelphia: Blanchard and Lea, 1864. Third Edition, Revised and Enlarged, with 273 illustrations. Original wartime medical text, boldly inscribed on the front flyleaf: “James C. Ryan, Taunton, Mass., Sept. 19th, 1864.” James C. Ryan was a medical student at Bellevue College Hospital in 1864, documented by accompanying research. Bellevue was deeply involved in Civil War medical care, treating large numbers of battle casualties. As the research notes, following the Battle of Gettysburg in July 1863, 613 patients arrived at Bellevue to receive treatment for their wounds. Students like Ryan would have participated in the care of these soldiers while completing their medical training. A well-preserved and historically significant wartime edition, directly linked to a named Civil War-era medical student engaged in treating the wounded. accompanied by extensive research.
