Foraging Scene of the 8th Indiana Infantry

This period hand-drawn Civil War sketch depicts a dynamic foraging scene involving the 8th Indiana Infantry, rendered with remarkable narrative detail and soldierly authenticity by John W. Goodlander, an enlisted Union soldier and later sergeant. 

 

Executed in pencil on a large sheet of yellowed period paper, the drawing presents a wide, panoramic composition framed by a hand-ruled border. The scene unfolds across gently rolling terrain and centers on a rural Southern homestead, complete with a small cabin, outbuildings, fencing, and a family burial plot—details that speak to the realities of wartime occupation and the intrusion of armies into civilian life. 

 

Throughout the composition, Union soldiers are shown actively foraging, Infantrymen advance with muskets at the ready. Mounted cavalrymen maneuver across the field. A soldier is shown seizing livestock. Others move tactically through the landscape, depicting both military discipline and the necessities of survival. 

 

The inclusion of civilians, farm animals, fences, and grave markers adds emotional and historical depth, illustrating the often-unrecorded human impact of Civil War campaigning. The artist’s careful attention to uniform details, posture, and movement reflects firsthand experience rather than post-war imagination. 

 

At the lower margin, a handwritten inscription identifies the scene and artist, firmly anchoring the drawing to its maker and subject. The folds visible across the paper are consistent with a soldier-carried field sketch—likely folded and kept among personal effects during service.
