Wood from Lincoln’s Home & Oak Leaf from Lincoln’s Tomb (1939–1940)
Attractive and historic Lincolniana relic display signed by Henry W. Fay, longtime custodian of Lincoln’s Tomb.
Mounted on period paper are:
A fragment identified as wood from Lincoln’s Springfield home (now lacking)
An oak leaf from a tree at Lincoln’s Tomb
Handwritten inscriptions read:
“Sept 25, 1939 – A piece of wood from Lincoln’s Springfield home”
“Oak leaf from tree Lincoln’s Tomb”
Embossed header:
H.W. Fay – Custodian Lincoln’s Tomb – Springfield, Illinois
Signed and dated Dec. 18, 1940
Fay served for decades as custodian and was known for certifying relic fragments obtained during preservation work before modern conservation policies ended the practice. His signed material remains desirable among Lincoln collectors.
