Description
Civil War 3rd Division, 3rd Army Corps
Veteran Reserve Corps Flag
Veteran Reserve Corps flag constructed of lightweight wool bunting with a dark blue lozenge (diamond) center sewn to a cream field.
The hoist retains its original printed selvedge marking “R.C. Toy No. 47 N. 9th Phila.” Most importantly, the hoist bears period stencil identification reading “3rd Div. 3rd Army Corps” indicating issue to the 3rd Division, 3rd Army Corps.
The 3rd Army Corps served prominently in the Army of the Potomac, seeing action at major engagements including Chancellorsville and Gettysburg. The Veteran Reserve Corps (originally the Invalid Corps) was composed of soldiers unfit for active field service but assigned to guard, hospital, and garrison duties.
The flag exhibits honest age toning and light staining consistent with period service. A highly desirable Civil War organizational flag with direct corps level association and strong display presence.Formerly from the MOLLUS museum.
