A classic and highly influential pre-Civil War military text by D. H. Mahan, Professor of Military and Civil Engineering at the United States Military Academy at West Point. First published in the 1830s and expanded here in its 1846 second edition, this work served as the foundational instructional manual on field fortifications for an entire generation of officers—many of whom would go on to serve as generals on both sides during the Civil War.

 

Bound in its original publisher’s cloth, the volume features an embossed decorative cover and retains its period spine with partial gilt titling. The binding shows honest wear consistent with age and use, including fraying at the extremities and rounding to the spine, yet remains intact and sound. Internally, the book is complete, with typical age toning, scattered foxing, and areas of staining as shown. The title page clearly identifies the 1846 New York Wiley and Putnam imprint.

 

Of particular note is a period ink inscription reading “37th Regiment,” adding a layer of potential wartime or pre-war military association. Works by Mahan were standard issue or privately acquired by officers and cadets, and surviving examples with possible unit attribution are especially desirable.
