Civil War U.S. Issue Signal Corps Copper Fuel Canteen with Original Sling

 

9.5″ diameter, 3″ thick, with heavy reinforced seam and embossed ring on each side. Slender 3″ copper spout with brass screw off lid which is attached to the body via a brass chain. Four copper sling loops and retaining the original 1.75″ wide belt with black japanned roller buckle for adjustment. “Canteen” is in near perfect with just a couple of minor shallow dents. Sling with some finish crazing and minor flaking, but very sound. Although generically categorized as a “canteen,” these were issued to store/ carry fuel for Signal Corps lanterns etc. and were not designed as drinking vessels. Constructed of copper to reduce the risk of igniting the fuel, there are several images extant of Signal Corps personnel displaying one of these “canteens.”
