Description

Captured and Reissued Springfield Rifle Musket

Model 1861 Springfield rifle musket believed to have been captured and reissued during the Civil War.

The lock markings remain crisp with U.S. Springfield and eagle motif dated 1862. All three barrel bands are stamped with the U inspection mark and the barrel retains strong rifling.

Steel components display a deep plum patina. A faint letter “T” is stamped on the underside of the stock near the trigger guard.

Captured and reissued arms were commonly used by both Union and Confederate forces as battlefield recovery of weapons was routine.

Captured-and-reissued arms add an especially appealing layer of Civil War history, since they directly reflect battlefield recovery and the constant recycling of military equipment by both sides. Union-made rifle muskets taken in action were frequently put back into Confederate service, while captured Southern arms could likewise be reissued when needed. Marks of corps ownership, unit use, and reissue all strengthen the historical character of such pieces.
