1850 Model Foot Officer’s Sword
A well-preserved and attractive example of the Model 1850 Foot Officer’s Sword, identified as an imported piece of French manufacture. The blade presents a bright gray surface with light, even peppering of darker patina, most noticeable toward the tip. The acid-etched panels remain clear and visible, retaining strong detail when viewed at an angle. The left ricasso is stamped “Paris,” confirming its foreign origin, a feature commonly encountered on mid-19th century imported officer’s swords.
The brass hilt and pommel exhibit a pleasing, naturally aged golden tone, showing honest wear with no harsh cleaning. The grip retains its original ray (sharkskin) covering and twisted wire wrap, both intact and well-preserved, with a nicely mellowed appearance that complements the hilt.
The scabbard mounts display a consistent patina matching the hilt. The leather scabbard body remains in solid condition, retaining much of its original black finish with only minor areas of flaking that reveal the brown leather beneath—typical of age and use. The stitched seam remains intact along the length.
Overall, this is a clean, honest example of an imported Model 1850 Foot Officer’s Sword, offering strong visual appeal with clearly visible etching and desirable “Paris” marking—an excellent representative piece for a Civil War edged weapons collection.
