Harpers Ferry Model 1841 Mississippi Rifle – Modified Sporting Rifle
This attractive Harpers Ferry Model 1841 Mississippi Rifle has been professionally modified into a sporting half-stock rifle while retaining much of its original character and appeal. Chambered in .54 caliber, the barrel retains an even browned finish and is fitted with a simple notched rear sight and a small brass blade front sight near the muzzle. The bore remains exceptionally strong, with clean, crisp, and deep rifling that shows only modest wear.
The lock plate has developed a pleasing gray patina and is marked with the federal eagle over “US” ahead of the bolster and dated Harpers Ferry 1851 at the rear. The lock functions perfectly, exhibiting a smooth hammer pull and secure half-cock and full-cock positions.
Brass furniture, including the patch box, trigger guard, and buttplate, displays a rich mustard-yellow patina that contrasts beautifully with the dark walnut stock. The stock itself remains smooth and clean with only minor handling marks near the buttplate.
Converted to a sporting configuration, the rifle features a half-stock design with the barrel secured by a wedge key. Two steel ramrod pipes have been added beneath the barrel to retain the ramrod. Included is the correct Model 1841-style ramrod fitted with a distinctive trumpet-shaped brass tip. The fore-end is finished with an attractive silver cap through which the ramrod passes into the ramrod channel.
Aesthetically pleasing and mechanically sound, this modified Mississippi Rifle offers a unique blend of military heritage and 19th-century sporting rifle craftsmanship. Its attractive brass patch box, strong bore, and tasteful conversion make it a desirable addition to any Harpers Ferry or early American arms collection.
