1/9 Plate Ambrotype of Union Sailor, with Photographer’s Card Label

 

Civil War–era 1/9 plate ambrotype depicting a Union Navy sailor. The sitter wears a naval jumper with broad collar and a flat, round sailor’s cap, clearly identifying him as U.S. Navy personnel. He is seated in a studio pose with a steady, direct gaze typical of wartime portraits.

 

Housed in its original leatherette case, with the spine separated but otherwise intact, retaining the original gilt brass oval mat and preserver. Behind the image is the original photographer’s printed card stock label:

“W. H. Dole,

Ambrotypes and Photographs,

No. 151½ Hanover Street,

Boston.

Copying done neatly.”
