Description
“10¢ A Plug” Tobacco Box with Original Rope Twist Plug and U.S. Revenue Label
Exceptional tobacco dealer’s wooden box retaining its original coiled rope plug tobacco and partial U.S. Internal Revenue tax label. The side label identifies it as “Manufactured Tobacco – 5 Pounds, CHEW”, applied under the 19th-century excise system that taxed domestic tobacco production following the Civil War.
The hinged wooden box is clearly hand-joined with early nail construction and shows period handling wear, age toning, and scattered worm holes consistent with long-term storage. Inside, the original hand-twisted tobacco rope remains intact — a rare survival of this early “plug” or “twist” style tobacco, which was typically sliced for chewing or pipe use. Faint stenciled lid lettering reads “Pa Hollywood Tobacco 10¢ A Plug.”
An outstanding and seldom-seen artifact, illustrating everyday life and federal regulation. Perfect for display with personal effects, Civil War soldier’s camp items, or other 19th-century smoking-related pieces.
