Description

1841 Model Mississippi Rifle by E. Whitney, Dated 1848

A strong and desirable example of the U.S. Model 1841 “Mississippi” Rifle, manufactured by Eli Whitney and dated 1848. The lock is clearly marked “E. Whitney U.S.” with “N. Haven 1848” at the rear, and the barrel tang is correspondingly dated 1848. The rifle remains in its altered percussion configuration, having been rebored to .69 caliber for use with a socket bayonet—an alteration commonly encountered on these rifles during later service.

The barrel exhibits a smooth, dark brown patina with clear inspection marks, including “US,” “H,” and a “P” proof in an oval. The breech area shows typical wear with a deep, aged patina, while the brass furniture retains a rich, mellow yellow tone. The stock remains solid and attractive, showing expected handling marks and minor wear. The front sight has been modified to accommodate a socket bayonet, and there are small losses at the upper barrel channel, consistent with service use. The ramrod has been shortened, now fitted with a period-style divided brass tip.

All major components are present and intact, including the early-style sling swivels and patchbox.

The rifle presents as an honest, well-used example of a classic arm that saw continued service into the Civil War period. A very displayable and historically representative Mississippi Rifle, reflecting both its original configuration and later wartime adaptations.
