Description
1850 Model Foot Officer’s Sword with Leather Scabbard
A fine and well-preserved example of the Model 1850 Foot Officer’s Sword, exhibiting excellent blade condition and strong overall eye appeal.
The blade remains bright with a high polish, showing only minimal peppering of darker patina concentrated near the tip and along the left edge. The acid-etched panels are crisp and clearly visible, retaining strong contrast and detail. While no visible maker’s mark is present, the blade profile and fuller configuration are consistent with American manufacture.
The brass hilt, pommel cap, and scabbard mounts retain traces of original gilding, now mellowed with age. Areas of wear reveal a darker, attractive patina beneath, giving the piece a balanced, untouched appearance. The grip is slightly more curved than typically encountered, yet remains structurally sound and visually appealing. It retains its original ray (sharkskin) covering with multi-strand wire wrap intact.
A red cloth washer is present at the blade-to-guard junction, serving its original function of sealing out moisture when sheathed.
The leather scabbard remains in solid condition, largely retaining its black finish. There are scattered areas where age has caused the outer surface to flake, exposing the brown leather beneath. The throat mount shows darker toning compared to the other fittings, consistent with wear to the original gilding.
An attractive and honest example, highlighted by its exceptional blade and well-preserved etched decoration—an excellent addition to any advanced Civil War edged weapons collection.
