1852 – Life at the South; or “Uncle Tom’s Cabin” As It Is, by W. L. G. Smith – First Edition
Important first edition of Life at the South; or “Uncle Tom’s Cabin” As It Is: Being Narratives, Scenes, and Incidents in the Real “Life of the Lowly,” by W. L. G. Smith. Published in Buffalo by Derby & Co. and in Cincinnati by H. W. Derby & Co., 1852. Hardcover, 519 pages with 11 illustrations.
This work was written in direct response to Harriet Beecher Stowe’s landmark anti-slavery novel Uncle Tom’s Cabin (1852). Representing a Southern perspective, Smith sought to dispute Stowe’s portrayal of slavery and present a counter-narrative defending the institution. As such, the volume stands as one of the earliest examples of pro-slavery literature published to rebut abolitionist writings.
The book is bound in period cloth, showing expected foxing and staining from age, but remains intact. Approximately 7” tall.
A rare and significant counterpoint to Stowe’s influential work, this volume provides critical insight into the antebellum debate over slavery and Southern efforts to defend the practice in print.
Comes housed in 12 x 16 riker display case with red velvet and descriptive card.
