1860 Model Light Cavalry Saber – Ames MFG. Co. Dated 1861

 

A desirable Civil War Model 1860 Light Cavalry Saber manufactured by Ames Mfg. Co., Chicopee, Massachusetts and dated 1861.

 

The blade presents a bright gray tone with scattered, even peppering. The left ricasso retains a clear “MADE BY AMES MFG. CO / CHICOPEE MASS” scroll stamp, while the right is marked “U.S.”, inspector initials “G.G.S.”, and the date 1861. Matching inspector initials are faintly visible on the pommel cap.

 

The brass hilt exhibits a pleasing, mellow yellow patina consistent with age. The guard shows a slight, period bend to the outer branch from service use. The grip retains most of its original leather covering, with minor loss at the high points exposing the wood beneath; the twisted wire wrap is no longer present.

 

The steel scabbard carries a deep brown patina, missing its lower ring, and shows a small, honest dent on the right side between the lower mount and drag.

 

A well-marked and attractive Ames cavalry saber with strong Civil War character.
