Description
1860 Model Light Cavalry Saber
A solid and honest example of the Civil War-era Model 1860 Light Cavalry Saber, retaining its original components and displaying the attractive age and character collectors appreciate in a service-used cavalry weapon. Though unmarked, the saber follows the classic pattern that became synonymous with Union mounted forces during the American Civil War.
The blade remains largely bright with a pleasing silver-gray appearance and scattered peppering of darker age patina. One area along the right cutting edge exhibits approximately one inch of light abrasions and scratching, likely the result of a period sharpening or contact with a grinding wheel. No visible maker’s or inspector’s marks are present on the blade.
The brass guard and pommel cap have aged to an attractive mellow yellow patina. A pleasing blue-green oxidation is present within portions of the guard, providing additional evidence of age and authenticity. The hilt remains structurally sound and retains its original leather grip covering. While most of the twisted brass wire wrap is absent, a single loop survives directly beneath the pommel cap, preserving evidence of the original grip configuration.
An original buff leather blade washer remains intact at the junction of the blade and guard, a desirable feature often missing from surviving examples. The grip exhibits honest wear consistent with age and handling but remains attractive and complete.
The steel scabbard has developed a smooth, even brown patina over its surface and complements the saber well. The scabbard retains its carrying ring and mounts and presents with the untouched appearance sought by many collectors. The drag is stamped with the letter “C” on the right side.
Introduced shortly before the outbreak of the Civil War, the Model 1860 Light Cavalry Saber became the standard saber carried by Union cavalry troopers and remains one of the most recognizable American military swords ever produced. This example displays the honest wear and untouched character of a cavalry weapon that has survived more than a century and a half.
A desirable entry-level Civil War cavalry saber that offers authenticity, originality, and strong display appeal at an accessible price point.
