Abraham Lincoln Memorial CDV — “Sacred to the Memory of Abraham Lincoln” (1865)

 

A powerful and historic Civil War–era mourning carte de visite issued shortly after the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln on April 15, 1865. The design features a funerary monument motif with the inscription:

“SACRED TO THE MEMORY OF ABRAHAM LINCOLN
16th PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES
DIED APRIL 15th 1865
WE MOURN OUR COUNTRY’S LOSS.”

 

At the center is a finely executed engraved portrait of Lincoln within an oval medallion, symbolizing reverence and national grief. These mourning CDVs were widely cherished keepsakes in the months following Lincoln’s death, and they remain highly collectible today.
