Pvt. John Culbertson, 83rd Pennsylvania Infantry 

An exceptionally poignant Civil War relic, this black silk mourning rosette was worn following the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln in April 1865 and is accompanied by its original handwritten identification to “John Culbertson, 83rd Pa. Vols.” Research confirms Culbertson enlisted in Company G, 83rd Pennsylvania Infantry on March 1, 1864, was mortally wounded at Peebles’ Farm, Virginia, on September 30, 1864, and died of his wounds the following day. 

The rosette stands as a tangible symbol of the nation’s grief at Lincoln’s death while also serving as a personal memorial to one of the Union soldiers who sacrificed his life preserving the Union Lincoln fought to save. Few artifacts so powerfully connect the loss of the President with the sacrifice of the common soldier. A deeply moving and highly displayable piece of Civil War mourning history with unquestionable identification and historical significance.
