Washington, D.C. Dated February 6, 1878

An original autograph by Alexander Hamilton Stephens (1812–1883), signed “Alexander H. Stephens” and additionally inscribed “Washington, D.C.” with the date “6th Feb. 1878.” The signature is executed in dark ink on a light card, creating an attractive and highly displayable example from the post-Civil War period.

Alexander H. Stephens is best remembered as the Vice President of the Confederate States of America, serving under Jefferson Davis throughout the Civil War. Prior to secession, Stephens was a prominent Georgia congressman and an influential national politician. Following the war, he returned to public life, once again serving in the U.S. House of Representatives before being elected Governor of Georgia in 1882, a position he held until his death.

This autograph was signed during Stephens’ tenure as a member of the U.S. House of Representatives while he was residing in Washington, D.C., adding historical context to the piece. His autograph remains one of the most sought-after Confederate political signatures, making it an important addition to any Civil War, Confederate, or presidential-era autograph collection.
