Allen & Thurber Pepperbox Revolver
.36 Caliber – Allen’s Patent 1837
This is a fine example of the iconic Allen & Thurber “pepperbox” revolver, patented by Ethan Allen in 1837 and produced in the late 1830s through 1840s. Chambered in .36 caliber, these multi-barrel percussion pistols represent one of the most successful repeating handgun designs prior to the widespread dominance of Colt’s revolving cylinder system.
The pistol features a cluster of six fluted barrels that rotate around a central axis when the trigger is pulled — a true double-action mechanism. Each pull of the trigger both cocks and releases the concealed hammer while indexing the barrel cluster. The top rib is stamped “ALLEN’S PATENT”, consistent with early production.
The frame displays period scroll engraving, and the walnut bag-shaped grip retains a pleasing aged patina with visible grain and honest handling wear. The iron surfaces show a smooth, naturally aged patina. A very nice representation of the famous pepper box.
