William Augustus Nichols was born on May 12, 1818 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and was graduated from West Point in 1838 and was 19 of 45 in his class. On August 3, 1861 he was commissioned as Lieutenant Colonel and Adjutant General of the Department of the East, on June 1, 1864 he was promoted to Colonel, on September 24 brevetted as Brigadier General and on March 24, 1865 Major General.
