Description
Ames Model 1840 Cavalry Saber
A fine and desirable early production example of the Model 1840 Light Cavalry Saber, manufactured by the legendary Ames Manufacturing Company of Cabotvilie, Massachusetts, and clearly dated 1850 on the ricasso. The saber features its classic curved blade with full, untouched surfaces and a lightly aged patina. The “Ames Mfg. Co. / Cabotvililie” and “1850 / U.S.” markings remain deeply struck and legible, accompanied by original inspector initials A.D.K. The brass guard retains a mellow golden patina, and the leather-wrapped grip with twisted brass wire remains tight and nearly complete—an increasingly scarce attribute on early war-dated sabers. Paired with its original steel scabbard, which is free of major dents and retains a smooth, aged finish with intact throat, ring mounts, and drag. An important and highly collectible early-war Ames saber, ideal for any serious collection of Civil War cavalry arms.
