Description

Anti-Tobacco Medallion / Fob – Moral Reform Movement Token

A fantastic example of a mid-19th century anti-tobacco token, issued as part of the broader moral-reform and temperance movements of the 1840s–1870s. These small brass tokens were distributed by reform societies, church youth groups, and early temperance organizations to discourage tobacco use and associated vices.

Obverse Text:

“I WILL NEVER USE TOBACCO * IN ANY FORM”

Centered is an image of a kneeling man breaking a pipe—symbolizing renunciation of the habit.

Reverse Text:

“TOBACCO,

TENDS TO IDLE-

NESS, POVERTY,

STRONG DRINK,

VICE,

ILL HEALTH,

INSANITY &

DEATH.”

A powerful list of moral and physical dangers as understood by 19th-century reformers. A small hole at the top suggests this piece was worn as a fob, pendant, or pocket charm, often given to children or young adults pledging abstinence. A wonderful, conversation-starting token connecting to America’s early public-health and temperance history.

Comes housed in 5 x 6 riker display case with blue velvet and descriptive card.
