An original autograph inscription of Charles Anderson Dana (1819–1897), one of the most influential American journalists of the nineteenth century. Written in his characteristic hand, the card reads, “Yours sincerely, Charles A. Dana. April 20/88.” 

Dana played a significant role in both the Civil War and American journalism. During the war, he served as the Assistant Secretary of War, acting as a trusted special investigator for Secretary of War Edwin M. Stanton and President Abraham Lincoln. Dana frequently visited Union armies in the field, reporting directly to Washington on military operations and the performance of Union generals. His observations helped shape federal military policy and earned him the confidence of the Lincoln administration. 

Following the war, Dana became the celebrated editor and part owner of the New York Sun, transforming it into one of the nation’s most influential newspapers. His editorials and reporting helped define American journalism during the late nineteenth century. 

This attractive ink autograph, dated April 20, 1888, was signed during Dana’s distinguished tenure as editor of the New York Sun. The signature remains bold and well-preserved, making it a desirable example from one of the Civil War’s most important civilian figures.
