Awesome Top Hat for the 1888 Republican Campaign

A refined and visually striking late 19th-century white top hat, retaining its original Republican political campaign advertisement affixed around the interior crown. The printing features portraits of Benjamin Harrison and Whitelaw Reid, clearly marked “The G.O.P.” and “Campaign Hat,” with the patriotic slogan “Protect Home Industry” beneath a vignette of the U.S. Capitol—firmly dating the piece to the 1888 presidential campaign.

The hat itself presents in clean display condition, its white body offering strong contrast to the detailed black campaign print. Notably, the interior is lacking its sweatband, a common condition issue in surviving examples, though the structural integrity and overall form remain solid. The piece overall shows expected age toning and light creasing, consistent with period wear, but remains fully legible and highly decorative.

Political hats of this type—particularly those retaining their original campaign adornments—are scarce survivors, as most were worn briefly and discarded. An exceptional crossover piece appealing to both political and textile collectors, as well as those focused on late 19th-century Americana.

A distinctive and display-ready example from the Harrison-Reid campaign, embodying the pageantry and messaging of Gilded Age politics.
