Description
Blakeslee Cavalry Cartridge Box – Ten Tube Model for Spencer Carbine
Excellent example of the Blakeslee patent cavalry cartridge box designed for the Spencer repeating carbine, in the desirable ten tube configuration. This pattern was developed to efficiently carry pre-loaded metallic cartridges in removable tin tubes, allowing mounted troops to rapidly recharge the Spencer—one of the defining firearms of late-war cavalry operations.
The box retains its original leather body with a pleasing, untouched surface showing honest service wear. The interior is configured for ten tubes, reflecting the higher-capacity issue favored by active cavalry units as the war progressed. Construction details remain strong, with intact stitching, form, and overall integrity consistent with field use.
The sling is no longer present, a common absence as these were frequently removed or lost in service. Aside from this, the box presents very well, with clean lines and solid structure, making it an attractive and increasingly scarce example of specialized cavalry accoutrements.
Blakeslee boxes are closely associated with elite mounted units equipped with Spencer carbines, particularly during the campaigns of 1863–1865, where rapid firepower gave Union cavalry a decisive edge.
A desirable and displayable example of a classic Civil War cavalry cartridge system.
