Description
Brass Snuff Box
Early 19th-century brass snuff box, circular in form with hinged lid, the cover finely engraved in elegant period script with a presentation inscription reading:
“John Birrell
1833”
The engraving is original and contemporaneous, executed in flowing cursive with strong legibility. The brass surface retains a warm, natural patina with scattered age spotting and light handling wear, consistent with early 19th-century use. The hinge remains intact and functional.
Such boxes were common personal items, often carried daily and occasionally presented as gifts or commemorative keepsakes.
A well-preserved and evocative antebellum personal artifact, suitable for display or for further genealogical research into the named individual.
