Buffalo Bill Cody Relic – Walnut Wood from His Early Home
Fascinating and exceptionally documented relic associated with Col. William F. “Buffalo Bill” Cody, legendary frontiersman, scout, and showman. This preserved block of walnut wood was cut from a timber of Cody’s early home in Salt Creek Valley near Fort Leavenworth, Kansas—the site where the Cody family settled in the early 1850s.
Accompanied by a handwritten and signed note from George J. Remsburg, dated Porterville, California, August 8, 1921, the piece details Remsburg’s firsthand recollections and provenance:
“This block of walnut wood was cut from a timber out of the early home of Col. William F. Cody (Buffalo Bill) in Salt Creek Valley near Fort Leavenworth, Kansas… I secured this block myself… Here Buffalo Bill settled with his parents in the early ’50s… where Bill Cody started on his famous career on the Plains.”
Remsburg was a personal acquaintance and early biographer of Buffalo Bill, having interviewed him multiple times between the 1890s and early 1900s. The relic includes an original 1922 newspaper clipping recounting Remsburg’s memories of Cody and their friendship, further enhancing its authenticity and interpretive value.
Comes housed in a 12×16 display case with red velvet backing and descriptive card.
