California “United States of America” Patriotic Counter Token

A striking patriotic counter token, featuring a bold federal eagle on the obverse surrounded by UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, and a distinctive California state flag on the reverse with CALIFORNIA COUNTER around the perimeter. These brass tokens circulated widely during the California Gold Rush era and into the Civil War period, often used as gaming counters, pocket pieces, or patriotic keepsakes.

This example shows a warm, untouched golden patina and crisp detail to both devices. A small period hole near the rim indicates it was likely carried as a watch-fob charm or worn as a patriotic badge—very common during the Civil War years when such tokens served as good-luck pieces or personal mementos.
