CDV of Unidentified Union Officer with Cavalry Officer’s Sword

This striking Civil War-era carte de visite features a seated Union officer in full uniform, posed with his sword prominently displayed across his lap. The single shoulder strap with visible insignia suggests the rank of second lieutenant, and the blue U.S. Internal Revenue stamp on the reverse dates the photograph to between August 1864 and August 1866, during the federal tax period for photographic images. While the officer remains unidentified and no studio backmark is present, the clarity and composition of the image capture the poise and pride typical of commissioned Union officers late in the war.
