Description
Civil War 1864 double bag, Knapsack
This piece is offered in nicer and a mostly complete condition – missing only one of the blanket roll straps and lengths of the interior white leather ties.
The majority of the tarred waterproof finish is intact and stable, with just a few areas of wear. Leather harness pieces and all straps show crazing but remain securely attached. All associated metal hardware is present, with a tarnish and/or oxidation. Interior flaps of the rear bag are present, along with the associated leather strap and roller buckles. Most of the body is free of major tears, with the largest (5.5”) noted along the upper front seam of the pieces joining the front and rear bags. A few small perforations are present as to be expected. None of this compromises the integrity of the knapsack.
Overall, a solid example of the more streamlined 1864 Knapsack, an essential piece that saw widespread issue and use during the Civil War.
